“If getting dressed is easy, you’re probably wearing something boring” oh no!!! I think the complete opposite actually, I think getting dressed SHOULD be easy. I love your style and so happy I found your substack! Your advice to give yourself room for compassion is the right move though. It’s the only way to get un-stuck!

Isn't that crazy?! What's so wrong with simplicity.... And thank you!

Trust me (a stranger on the internet)- simplicity is the way. 😂

I absolutely feel this way sometimes! I’ll go through cycles of “wow! I have great taste and I love my wardrobe” to “my clothes are boring and I’m not cool enough to have good style” in the span of a week. Sending you so much compassion but know that the positivity will come back around ♥️ and for the record, I love your style!

I echo this!! I can put the same outfit on two days in a row and my brain tells me two different things each time.

Maureen, I’m so sorry for the doubtful feelings. Honestly I have felt the same way the compassion break puts words to what I do each time. And usually have someone in my life who can speak positivity into me! So this is me saying; I love your style.

And thank you!

Honestly very similar to what you describe - I either totally disconnect from fashion by doing something else I love (or something that makes me feel like a badass like go to a workout class that I love) OR I actually lean in and style my absolute favourite pieces in my wardrobe/put on a tried and true favourite outfit.

Ooh yes…good add. Wearing an outfit that feels good!

Thank you for being so vulnerable—this is really what I needed! I’ve been grappling with similar toxic beliefs and trying to unpack it. 100%, part of the answer is to stop talking and thinking about fashion and just get out of my own head 😂

Everyone has an opinion, even our own psyche 🥲

I waffle between being insecure about all of the fashionable all people out there, and not looking like them, and feeling too wacky in my own personal style to fit in. And then I remember that I don’t want to fit in, ha ha, and that’s the reason that I started my Substack.😁💕

Dressing is easy when we are feeling confident. So all of your tips about stepping away from the closet and grounding oneself again are spot on, Maureen. Happy new year.💕

Thank you for being so open, Maureen! I also feel this way at times and, in fact, went through this very spiral today when I saw a certain IG page, thinking that personal has such a consistent style and POV. Spiral, spiral.

I totally agree with your Donts. I’ve been on IG for so long that I don’t scroll much (bc look what happens when I do)! Same as here on SS - there’s a fine line between being informed and being influenced (negatively).

Maureen, if you - a very stylish person - can have doubts and insecurities, that makes me feel so much better about my own insecurities. I’m sorry that some dumbass made you doubt yourself and your style journey. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sorry you've been feeling this way! I remember you writing something recently about reading too much fashion content lately (paraphrasing, sorry) and that resonated with me. It's all starting to blur together and feel chaotic, to the point where I'm not sure what I know anymore, lol! I hope we can both quiet our brains a bit. Sending good vibes.

Big proponent of Dr. Neff’s work and self-compassion! 😌 The more I’ve thought about style and my wardrobe, the muddier things have become for me. There is joy in simplicity! I found some Martha Stewart Living magazines from the 90s at the thrift store and was struck by how simple and lovely her outfits are.
